Sometimes cyclocross throws you a curveball. Checking the weather in the week leading up to Namur I was expecting a cold, heavily overcast day. In other words, a massive upgrade from my recent experience. When I think of Namur, aside from some pretty terrific racing, what I think of most is just absolutely miserable conditions. The kind of day that results in your hitherto most reliable foul weather gear being thrown in the trash.
So imagine my surprise when I awoke to find blue skies, wispy clouds and even, yes, the sun. It was a bit disorientating to be honest. Was this real cyclocross weather? The racing was still great. And the crowds came out in force. I could get used to this sort of thing.
Great shots as usual especially that downhill onto the cobbles at Namur which looks wicked - at least it wasn’t a mud slide as in years past. Great day for Sydney McGill and was nice to see Caleb’s name at least on the scroll during the race. Looking forward to the rest of the N. American contingent making some starts. From a photographers and viewers perspective having our US champs in UCI mandatory PanAms kit will make them hard to pick out. Maybe we could crowd fund to pay their fines if they go Stars and Bars? Seriously I still don’t get why any racers use 2x setups - so many dropped chains - whereas CX seems ideal for 1x.
