In the early 1990s, after finishing law school, I went on a date with a lovely person I met through mutual friends. I think we went to a movie. I can’t remember which one, but this had to be around 1995, so let’s say it was Empire Records.
The date seemed to go well. We talked, laughed, and watched Richmond, Virginia, natives GWAR have a cameo in a mainstream film. Good times. It was so good that I called this person a few days later and asked if she wanted to go out again. She said she couldn’t.
More specifically, she said, “I can’t because I got engaged.” Engaged! Like within 48 hours of our date1. I didn’t know what to say other than congratulations. Between me saying goodnight on, let’s say, a Friday and calling her on a Sunday … engaged.
For years, the way I told this story was to joke about the public service I had performed in this moment. I was the catalyst that convinced her that she needed to get engaged. Without delay. And more importantly, engaged to someone who wasn’t me. My good work was done, and I hope the person she married appreciates what I did for him. In all seriousness, I also hope she is still happily married thirty years later.
When I think about that story now, I realize it’s not my story; it’s hers. I’m just a bit player. A most likely forgotten part in her engagement story. She’s the main character, and I was an NPC2 (before that term even existed) who went and saw a movie with her before she said yes to marriage.
Perspective is wild, and other people’s shoes are fascinating. Try stepping in them once in a while, it’s crazy what you may learn. Just remember to wear socks when wearing other people’s shoes. For the full version of that story, catch me later this month on The Moth3.
Okay. Let’s do some Crans-Montana World Cup short-track and U23 Men’s XCO results. Here’s your No Spoilers Puppy in case I haven’t chewed up enough space with non-result related copy.

If my wife reads this, she will say it’s because I waited too long to call this person again. Much like I waited too long after I went on the first date with said wife, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to talk to me. Thankfully, she did.
NPC: Non-Player Character. It’s a video game or maybe Dungeon and Dragons. Both? I know just enough to get it wrong.
I’m not really going to be on The Moth.
Good lord 128 starters in the mens XCO - that is wild.
I really thought you were going to be in the Moth.
