This was my first time shooting Gavere, a race that normally has an earlier, more desirable, date on the calendar. But in spite of its post-worlds calendar slot this year’s edition attracted a good (limited) crowd and lots of attention after airing some dramatic in-race drone footage. The race also benefitted from good weather and from being the final round of the Superprestige series.
My day got off to a somewhat inauspicious start when I arrived at the press parking and was told that my name was not on the list and I would not be allowed to enter. The Gavere course is located next to a military installation and while the course is open to all, the press room and press parking are on the military base, which has strict security. Luckily I traveled to the race with my friend Geoffrey (who was on the list) and he was able to retrieve my credential and photo bib for me. This was only a minor inconvenience really, though if I had traveled to the race alone it could have been a real disaster.
After that bit of drama things went a lot more smoothly. The course itself was very photogenic and it was very easy to quickly get to the finish without losing a lap. A feature I really appreciate in a course. I’m definitely looking forward to shooting this one again in the future as I think I only scratched the surface of photo opportunities on this course.
